Analysis of Scouting for Girls, This Aint a love song and Analysis

Evaluation;
If we remade this music video again, we would preferably shoot the scenes in a more familiar setting to the video itself instead of a house/garden. Similarly, when shooting we would ensure that the lighting and contrast is similar to the video itself, our version uses bright bold colours and lots of contrast in comparison to the original which uses lack of colour and brightness.

Our digipack

For our genre we were given Hip/Hop or R&B, we then decided to follow through on the Hip Hop side of music, creating a front cover of a face, and back of the head.

Planning work for your digipack

Some of the planning for our Digipack altered in the process of development, at the moment our plans seem non existant. Me personally, I think that I would like to follow the style of famous Hip Hop artists that have had iconic CD covers and Digipacks, Lil Wayne for example. I found his CD cover including a photo of him as a child, with edited shots of his iconic tattoos placed onto the baby, similarly creating a play on words with his artist name of 'Lil Wayne' Lil representing little, and the photo of a young child created the iconic collaboration.
Other CD covers such as LiL Wayne's other CDs and Nas have used iconis photos of younger children collaborated with a state of presence, for this instance to the right, the editing effect showing the urban location behind the child, indicating this is where the artist lived and grew up, or to where his present location is.

Another idea which I really think looks effective on the front of a Hip Hop CD or Digipack is the photo of the artists face or body, having a lot of editing to it to make it look artistic and effective. The CD covers of Drake, T.I and Eminem have really stood out to me, and I think that if we could create an image similar to this, with a lot of editing, ours could look similar.

We intend to take a photo of a male face, preferably someone with peircing/tattoos visable (similar to other Hip Hop Artists) and to transform the photo into an edited style similar to above.

Planning work for your music video

Our music Video is based on the Song 'This aint a love song' By Scouting for Girls; we chose to remake the first 30 seconds of this mucis video. I think personally the main reason we liked the video was because it had a variety of content and shots involved, including shots of individuals and the artists. This is the video itself, upto 30 seconds.

For our plan we watched the video repeatedly and paused after everytime the shot or content of shot changed, we noted this down onto postit notes and placed it in order on an A3 piece of paper. After the general content was noted down we annotated the timings of shots, who out of our group would be reinacting the shots, and what props would be required; this is the photo of our plans. To the left is our notes.

For the filming, we drove to Lukes house, and we took ne camera with us; we planned certain shots depnding on the content of the shot and the placement of setting. It became a humourous event filming and reconstructing the film as finding a goldfish became a task, in our final version the shots will be shown, but it ended up with Luke holding a very very small white fish in a lunch bag, not alike to the video.

We planned to make sure that our shots and content would be the same as the video to the best extent possible, when filming singing shots we made sure the person in the shot new the right words and was fimiliar with how they should be performing.

Genre work and conventions for our digipack

Our group task is to design and produce a digipack for a new artist under the genre of R&B or Hip Hop, we have decided ti choose Hip Hop, similar to other artists.

Through research we have discovered that often on the CD covers of Hip Hop artists there is a variety of conventions:
artist on the front cover
face shots
lego, for example dr Dre
tyres/car items
flags
cartoons
old fashioned glasses
destruction
TV - children watching it
Streets and urban areas
Parental advisory stickers are often found.
American Flags

The wikipedia link offers more indepth detail about the origins and conventions of Hip Hop which I have read and intend to involve with our Media Digipack, the link to the website is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music.

We originally planned to stick to the comic style of the construction of a Hip Hop CD Genre, we produced the front cover involving the artist called 'Lil Crunk', an artist who we aimed to be a younger adult, just breaking into the music indistury; his CD cover involved a Plastic doll of a baby wearing the architectual 'Gangsta' Clothing. Ufortunatly this iconic cover was not suitable as it had to involve a photo which our group had taken personally.

From these conventions research and first attempt I have learnt the steriotypical conventions and styles of CD/Digipacks that are involved with the CD and artist, I plan to stick to this style strongly.

Star Theory and Analysis of how a star is constructed

Richard Dyer thought up the concept of 'Star', he thought of a variety of subgenres which linked to the actual concept of creating and adapting what we know as a 'star'.

A star is a real person - The star depends on a sense of the stars qualities and talents, it also relies on the fact that they have a life alike others, the everyday living similar to us 'normal' people, they can communicate with people just like us. They could potentially be parts of our lives and how when they die, we feel the loss as if we knew them as a real person; for example the loss of Micheal Jackson.

A star is a public performer of roles - Encounter with a star is the roles they have the roles, their bodies, their characteristic features such as voice, look, gesture. Through their roles we can associate them with particular attiduedes and ideology - Iconically Marilyn Monroe and her dress and bodily features.

A star is a persona - The merging of a real person and the roles they play in life, particularly where the star takes on the sae type of role regularly. This role and figure is constructed by fans, publicists and media, or all combines. Their persona may represent significant elements of the real person but it isnt necessary.

A star is an image - They can become a significant cultural, sign or figure in life, they create popular concentration of qualities admired by the mass audience, but most often these link to the gender and sexuality. The star may represent a particular image or model they wish to be noticed and recognized by; these stars may turn into objects of desire or embody values and respect which are fashionable or personal. This image can shift over time, but it can portray different things and meanings in different roles of society. A great example of the star image and the portrayal is Lady Gaga.

Analysis of how a star is constructed
I do agree, that the theory and approach of the 'Star' is valid, I am a strong believer in the artist being a 'normal' connotated human, they have an everyday life. I like to believe in the idea that the reason they are created is through their personal drive and ambition combined with talent and luck. I believe Richard Dyers approach is correct, but similarly think that the ovbious has been pointed out, and there are so many more elements involved with a star that is involved with the construction of the star.

Analysis of a Music Video - Rose

Analysis of Mika 'We are Golden'

The music video of 'We are Golden' is very lively, it involves a variety of bright and bold colours throughout the video to attract attention. The main plot of the video consists of Mika dancing and singing about in his bedroom, expressing himself and performing to the style of music. Using colours and shots to mislead the eye line. Portraying the sense of 'fun' and 'freedom' whilst showing a collection of items and toys which seem to be vintage and old fashioned; representing the 'Golden years' which the song is based on. It attracts the audience through the bright colours and the contrast of current and past times shown in the items and design of the setting.

The genre is based on rock/pop music, producing fast melodic music with the meaning of the lyrics being based around how to live life, and how our age group are the 'Golden age' and we should enjoy life.
Generally when comparing his other music videos they are very similar, they all have bright bold colours, revolving around a period of time in the past and a more vintage look to the videos. They all involve jumpy and energetic scenes.

The video starts by presenting who the artist is, showing a casset tape of his name on the tape implying that the song is sung by him, and also that it is based in the past, as Casset tapes are older technology in comparison to CD's and iPods. The sound plays the very end of the song, implying it has just finished.

The next clear sequence consists of Mika, the artist moving from his final position and jumping off the bed, to go and turn over the tape and play the song. As he turns the tape you can see the name 'We are Golden' which is the name of the song in the music video.

This shot clearly shows the whole shot of the bedroom where the main video is based in, he is wearing white boxer shorts and a comic hat, representing himself in a funny way, almost representing himself to be dancing and expressing himself alone. This outfit and scenery within the room are very bold, contrasting and individual creating the freedom and fun element created within the song.

Throughout the whole video the cutting rate is very quick, generally it shows Mika and then has 2 fast shots of different toys or items before returning to Mika again.

The camera angles used within this video is very suitable to the message given and portrayed. Shots displaying Mika (seeming to hang from the camera lense) and fly around is effective when creating the sense of carelessness. Also shots of high angle on lower shots prove effective when displaying his fast movements keeping the shots flowing. The shots when Mika is in the bath room opening a whole in the wall, contrast to Mika looking through show the eye shot allowing the audience to see what he sees. The editing techni ques involving fast speeding and slow motion on specific shots providing indepth detail and special effects.

Overall the video represents the style of music artist extremely well, it provides the suitable entertainment and creativity associated with the song.
